Our formation

Half a century of rockhounding

The Tar Heel Gem & Mineral Club was formed in 1974 as a nonprofit educational organization for people who enjoy the lapidary arts, earth sciences, and related subjects.

Five decades on, that founding purpose hasn’t changed — we’re still a group of neighbors swapping specimens, sharing finds, and welcoming anyone curious about what’s under their feet.

Our mission

What the club sets out to do

Two objectives have guided the club since the beginning.

01

To investigate, preserve, and share knowledge of rocks, minerals, and precious stones.

02

To promote interest in mineralogy, paleontology, earth sciences, and lapidary techniques.

Our activities

How we pursue those goals

The club works toward its mission through a full calendar of hands-on activities.
